Steffin Hill Extension

During my childhood, the longest our family ever lived in one place was from 1957 to 1967 when we lived on Steffin Hill Extension. The house had a large lot and a lovely view of the western Pennsylvania hills. It was while living there that I began writing letters. In this blog I continue the tradition, with irregular updates on my life and times.

Just strolled out with Charity (who deked two blocks north to study at the George Brown College Library), then over a block to Front Street Market to buy eggs. Was reminded again of what a perfect spot we live in. It's like a Disney-designed community, only better, since people really live here.

The air was hot and humid but at certain places--where you could basically see down to the harbor--cool air would rush in like natural air conditioning.

I guess you could call the preceding one of those "Good Things" I keep talking about.

A few notes before I hit the sack--I hope early--tonight. First, when I stepped on the scales this morning, I didn't like what I saw. In fact I haven't liked it the last few days. This reminds me of the complexities of weight loss and of changing any habit. Long, long years have gone into turning me in to the food-consuming machine that I am today, and it ain't gonna get fixed just by making a resolution. Yes I know what to do, yet I choose to do otherwise. This reminds me of a famous scripture in Romans 7 where Paul says something along to same lines ("those things that I hate, I do..."). This is why people band together, pray and seek a higher power in order to break their addictions. Experience has taught me that if I am not daily, hourly, living in desperate dependence on God, nuttin's gonna change. (Well, I can clean up my act a little here and a little there--but not the big, tough, habits...)

I realize that my content these days--talking about my problems and aspirations and so forth--may sound a bit narcissistic, but the reality is, what I'm writing about the last two posts, essentially, is the main thing God's given me to be working on these days. If I ever want to be of help to a wider world, well, he seems to be saying, get your own act together. This is all as logical and scriptural as one might ever imagine.

So why bring everyone else along for the ride? Well, uh, sometimes people can be helped by reading about other people's struggles--as well as their joys. There are plenty of examples both in and out of the Bible. Born Again, Chuck Colson's first person account of events surrounding his conversion comes to mind.

So maybe there is a person or persons out there who can identify with my piddling struggles--my jigs and jogs, my zigs and zags. That, I suppose, is one reason I could give for posting my "resolutions" (goals) and their outcomes.

Another, frankly, is that it helps me. Blogging gets the brain in a good place and is an excellent alternative to sitting in front of a TV and shovelling bits of edible matter down the ol' pie hole. Browsing in store a while ago I ran across Dr. Phil's book on dieting. I leafed through it and came across something he called "incompatible activities." You can't, for instance, be eating ice cream and showering at the same time. The activities are incompatible. Figure out things, he said, that are incompatible with eating. For me, one such incompatible activity is this. Since starting to write this message, I have not once been tempted to eat something!

Well, yet another goal--one I have not mentioned yet--is to "by 8:30 p.m. to be in bed each week night, all curled up with a nice novel so that I can read until I feel drowsy, then drift away to dreamland before 9:00." Tonight, I am failing in that goal (it's 9:04!) so this is where I will end.

See ya next time!

Woo hoo! Two days in a row! 3 outta 4! Very good. :-)

It's nice seeing some updates, even if they are just "the mundane details" of your life. I personally find those more interesting than book commentaries, or deep DEEP thoughts. :-) Just not a deep kinda person, I guess.

Anyways, glad to see you writing regularly again. Keep up the good work!
