I include the Calgary weather forecast, just below, for your interest or comfort (if you live somewhere warm and wish to experience schadenfreude--"pleasure taken from observing the misery of another"). Various points of interest, such as "dangerous wind chills" are highlighted:
Today: Bitterly cold. Occasional snow showers. Dangerous wind chills approaching -25F. High -3F. Winds NNE at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of snow 70%. 1 to 2 inches of snow expected.
Tonight: Bitterly cold. Variable clouds with snow showers. Low -18F. Winds NNE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of snow 40%.
Monday: Bitterly cold. Snow showers early becoming more scattered later. High -11F. Winds N at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of snow 40%.
Tuesday: Chance of a few snow showers. Highs -9 to -13F and lows -17 to -21F.
But seriously, folks, in fact we actually enjoy this. Last night (as we walked around the block) we agreed it reminded us of some Ontario winters 25 years ago. Winds whipped across fields and snow drifted high against our rented farmhouse. To cut down on drafts we had to staple plastic around windows and stuff newspapers around doors. Evenings we built wood fires and mornings I'd get up early to shovel the driveway. The car would start reluctantly (but being a good ol' Beetle, it always did) and some days I had to plow through drifts on country roads to get to work (whomp, whomp, wheee!)...
This morning, I'll go out to shovel as well, though this time it'll just be sidewalks and a deck. Instead of drifts in the country, here our driving challenge involves unplowed side streets. (We got new snow tires yesterday, and what a difference they make--yay!). The biggest challenge, actually, will be walking the 2.2 kms to and from work some days. But I specifically bought a warm coat for that purpose and still have long johns and extra warm socks.
Winter adventure, now in Calgary, lives.
