Steffin Hill Extension

During my childhood, the longest our family ever lived in one place was from 1957 to 1967 when we lived on Steffin Hill Extension. The house had a large lot and a lovely view of the western Pennsylvania hills. It was while living there that I began writing letters. In this blog I continue the tradition, with irregular updates on my life and times.

As we continue Our First Calendar Year in Calgary, we now enter the most interesting phase.

The winter!

Why? Because it's the time with the most drastic temperature swings.

Suddenly, an old timer told me yesterday, we can go from a high of, say, 14F one day to a high of 41F the next.

Yesterday, in fact, we experienced an example of things to come, as "chinook" winds warmed the city. The high was 66F. Tomorrow it's to be 64F.

(Herndon, Virginia, another place of interest, is to be 56F.)

My source also pointed out something else. A cloud formation in the sky yesterday was called a "chinook arch," he said. Towards the mountains, the solid clouds suddenly ceased and below the line, in lovely sunshine, the mountains shone.

It's a formation we can expect to see again and again this winter, he said--and it's something I'm sure we will learn to relish.
