Steffin Hill Extension

During my childhood, the longest our family ever lived in one place was from 1957 to 1967 when we lived on Steffin Hill Extension. The house had a large lot and a lovely view of the western Pennsylvania hills. It was while living there that I began writing letters. In this blog I continue the tradition, with irregular updates on my life and times.

Today was coolish, with a high of 12C (54F) and we explored downtown Calgary a bit. Went to a park on an island in the Bow River with a small wildlife preserve. Something we found surprising were the number of small trees that had been chewed down by beavers, some with fresh wood chips around them. I mean, this is right in the middle of Calgary, a city of a million people. Apparently beavers can cause erosion problems along river banks by chewing up so many trees. At this preserve they had wrapped saplings with wire mesh to keep the rascals away.

We also saw a big, docile wild rabbit (changing from white to brown) that didn't seem at all alarmed with us being about 15 feet away.

And about six Canada Geese mamas with their goslings. Two had ten little duckies, one had eight, and so forth. Again, they were utterly unconcerned with us being very close by.

This week it's supposed to get warmer and next weekend we're doing a rescheduled trip into the mountains (woo woo!).
