Steffin Hill Extension

During my childhood, the longest our family ever lived in one place was from 1957 to 1967 when we lived on Steffin Hill Extension. The house had a large lot and a lovely view of the western Pennsylvania hills. It was while living there that I began writing letters. In this blog I continue the tradition, with irregular updates on my life and times.

I took one of our collapsible fabric camping chairs in the backyard and I'm sitting here in the shade of the garage on this cool but spectacularly beautiful morning. When it's nice here, it's really nice, with crystal clear air and virtually no pollution.

The yard here is bordered by a fence which mostly blocks the view from next door where our neighbor has a kind of Zen garden paradise with (from what I can tell) rocks and bridges and tinkling water. Also behind the fence on her side are four poplar trees, averaging, say 15 feet in height. Those are one of the kinds of trees you see a lot of here. But I've never seen an oak or maple.

The backyard of this rental property, though needing work (we're supposed to be getting the back deck renovated, for instance) has its positive points. It's private, has a nice (small) flowering tree, and much of the time is reasonably quiet. To greater or lesser degrees you hear traffic, jets, birds (most often crows, but right now I'm hearing a few song birds) or kids playing--sometimes right on the other side of the fence in the alley. The sky today couldn't be bluer and the fluffy, torn cotton ball clouds, whiter.

But I'm wearing a jacket with a warm lining. If I was in the sun it would be better, but then I couldn't see the screen to be writing this, now could I?

Yesterday we drove to a place downtown where you could walk along a path beside the Elbow River. The river was swollen and the path obliterated by water at one point so that we instead crossed a bridge and walked around the Mission district. Part of it is 17th Avenue, a trendy street with walk-up apartments and nice shops, pubs, restaurants. Looks like an area we'd enjoy living in except generally residents have to park on the street, and in Calgary (with its weather and crime) that can stink.

Well, time to round this off and go sit in the sun!
