So we rose early and for the first time went to the 9:00 instead of 10:30 service. There were probably half as many people there and about 75 per cent looked to be senior citizens. The hymns for that service were "more traditional" instead of "more contemporary," as the website puts it. Besides classics hymns they also had classic choruses that I remember from the 60's and 70's. The preaching was good as always, I should add, delivered masterfully. (The pastor never says "um" or "uh"!!) It was kind of a warm up for the service following, I thought.
Last night we went with friends of friends to a fund raising dinner at a nearby church where we were served Italian food and had nice conversations at our table with some "young people" as I would call them, though actually some were in their early 30's. One comment about Calgary was that this part, the northeast, the part everybody told us to stay away from when choosing an area to live in, in fact is the most "laid back." People here are more "just folks." They're not fast tracking, spinning on their little gerbil wheels every day as they try to get ahead and so forth. So if what they say is true, that means we're in the right spot, since deep in our bones we're laid back kinda folks ourselves...
