Steffin Hill Extension

During my childhood, the longest our family ever lived in one place was from 1957 to 1967 when we lived on Steffin Hill Extension. The house had a large lot and a lovely view of the western Pennsylvania hills. It was while living there that I began writing letters. In this blog I continue the tradition, with irregular updates on my life and times.

So I'm sitting here on my IKEA black leather swivel office chair with the sound of classical 96.3 FM Toronto playing from the other room on our laptop. I'm taking a break from scrubbing paint off the woodwork. It's a long story. The landlord couldn't find the usual pros to paint our place (usual Calgary labor shortage) so got somebody who's new to Canada and seemed to never have painted before--or had only whitewashed the barn before or something.

We were here with the landlord when that person was painting, back in January, and I'd mentioned to the landlord that the painter was leaving spots of paint on the floor to dry and that I'd better not find them there when we moved in, and so forth. But I neglected to mention "and no paint on the woodwork either!"--so there's paint on the woodwork.

"Oh you mean you don't LIKE paint on your woodwork? Most people do..." (imaginary conversation).

Well, the good news was, the landlord reduced our rent because of the aforementioned (plus the fact that they failed to clean the place properly). The bad news is, we have to clean up the mess.

Ah, but things could be worse. We could have failed to find a place to live. It's a tight market.

Tomorrow I go to see the editorial assistant I've been working with at the magazine. We're going to brainstorm about the next piece I'm going to work on (gotta find a subject) and she's going to fill me in about stuff I need to know.

This morning I took back the Shaw Communications Digital Phone apparatus and cancelled their service so that now we're utterly dependent on the good graces of the internet, our ISP, and Vonage for voice communications. Over the weekend I went out to Best Buy and bought a fancy schmancy AT & T cordless phone with three handsets which each can be charged on its own little cradle. It was on special, cheap, but has all the bells and whistles we care about. Besides that each handset has a pretty little display with colored pictures, the time of day, and the like. It cost about the same for this fancy schmancy phone as an unfancy single cordless phone cost several years ago. So now whereever we are in our vast estate, we are close to a phone. No need to leap out of our chairs and rush to wherever the phone is, as we were wont to do in our tiny apartment in Toronto.

So now I've filled you in on a number of rather minor details of life. Soon the fancy schmancy phone will ring and it will be Charity and I will be arising from my fancy schmancy IKEA chair and going to pick her up in our decidedly unfancy 2005 Hyundai Accent...
