Steffin Hill Extension

During my childhood, the longest our family ever lived in one place was from 1957 to 1967 when we lived on Steffin Hill Extension. The house had a large lot and a lovely view of the western Pennsylvania hills. It was while living there that I began writing letters. In this blog I continue the tradition, with irregular updates on my life and times.

As I sit tapping on the keyboard on this Saturday (in our newly-set-up office, with boxes marked "Books" and "Ted's misc" piled to one side) I find new evidence that our steps have been guided. Here in Calgary there's a doctor shortage for some reason. Last week a headline blared, "200,000 Calgarians Lack Family Physician." So naturally, we were concerned.

So this morning I found the Calgary Health Region's website which had a list, updated Feb. 15, of doctors taking patients. (It warned that by the time a person calls the list could be outdated, however.) Anyhow, it listed 23 Calgary doctors taking patients. And of the 23, 17 were in our quadrant (the northeast, the part of the city considered least desirable, though we like it) and one was just a few blocks away. So we shall see.

The explanation for the preponderance of names in this area could be that most of them appear to be of South Asian extraction and some Calgarians have been accused (but not by moi) of being rather, shall we say, at least in the past, redneck. But I don't believe a word of it...
